Visiting Northern Indiana
Throughout the late summer and into the fall, discover an impressive array of things to do, places to explore, and festivals to experience across northern Indiana. From Mishawaka, awash in gold and blue thanks to Notre Dame football, to Fort Wayne and it’s annual Johnny Appleseed Festival – northern Indiana will prove to be an ideal destination this fall.
No question about it – one of the biggest draws during the fall in northern Indiana is Notre Dame football. From nearby Elkhart and Goshen, drive in to South Bend and visit Notre Dame Stadium for a slew of games this autumn. The Fighting Irish play their first home game of 2016 on September 10th against the Nevada Wolf Pack at 3:30 p.m. They’ll have marquee matchups against schools like Stanford on October 15th, and Virginia Tech on November 19th.
Plan your fall visit to northern Indiana with the kids and check out the annual Zoo Boo event held at the Potawatomi Zoo in South Bend. Zoo Boo takes place from October 21st to 23rd, and features lighted displays, pumpkin carvings, Halloween costume contests, and candy giveaways. You can make the short and scenic drive east from nearby La Porte.
The aforementioned Johnny Appleseed Festival is one of the premier annual celebrations held in Fort Wayne. From Kendallville, make the short drive south along Interstate 69 on September 17th and 18th and check out the 42nd edition of this festival. It’s all held at the Johnny Appleseed Memorial Park.
You’ll want to experience one of northern Indiana’s most exceptional culinary events this fall – don’t miss the annual Fort Wayne Chilifest. On October 1st from noon to 4 p.m., the Headwaters Park West Pavilion will be abuzz with the sights, sounds, and aromas of talented chefs preparing their best batch of chili. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite!
On your travel agenda, try to make some time for a culturally diverse and edifying experience. Visit the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory now through November 13th for this year’s Japanese Garden Exhibit. Sponsored by the Fort Wayne Sister Cities Council, the Japanese Garden Exhibit is closed Mondays, and features intricately designed paths through lush garden landscapes.
