Take the Family to World Famous Zoos
Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden
Walking around zoos with the kids in tow, watching as the creatures and critters meander about – eating, playing, sleeping – is one of the classically American adventures for families. On your visit into Indiana, you’ll have a wealth of zoo choices – whether you’re in the northern region, Indianapolis metro area, or the southern region of the Hoosier State.
The biggest and most popular zoo is the Indianapolis Zoo, set in – you guessed it – downtown Indianapolis. As a part of the White River State Park, and set just along the White River, the Indianapolis Zoo opened in 1964 and has been providing locals and visitors with animals insights ever since.
In northern Indiana, check out the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. Opened in July of 1965 in Fort Wayne, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo has been dazzling and thrilling kiddos – young and old – ever since. An easy drive from nearby cities like Kendalville, Peru, and Goshen, families are never disappointed with their visit to the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo – don’t miss Dr. Diversity’s Rain Forest Research Station, or the Jungle Dome Aviary.
Another of northern Indiana’s zoos is the Washington Park Zoo. Set near Portage and Chesterton, the Washington Park Zoo is a sterling choice for a festive and entertaining afternoon with the family. June visitors to the Washington Park Zoo should keep an eye open for the annual Zoofari Beach Party. The Washington Park Zoo is a great afternoon destination when you’re visiting LaPorte.
Head to southern Indiana and plan a visit to the Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden. Set in Evansville, Mesker Park Zoo is a quick drive from Clarksville or Dale, and offers a wide variety of animal adventures for the whole family. With more than 700 animals on site and a wealth of diverse botanic varieties, the Mesker Park Zoo is yields excellent fun – be sure to make it a stop on your tour of outdoor Indiana.
